Question:
with the reference to the case study and using your own research, evaluate the use of new technologies to:
· Become more affordable/economical.
· Improve the productivity of the employees.
· Improve the Communication of the two offices.
Answers:
1. Providing the office with a WAN will save the company (N&Q investments) the price of an airline ticket. Airlines have increased the bill proportionally as the rise of crude oil increased, therefore providing a computer and WAN for offices around the world could cut on the expenditures of the company. This only became economically feasible when oil prices increased to above 100 a barrel and also it cut down on hotel prices.
2. Now different offices around different branches of N&Q investments can communicate with each other through the WAN where workers can communicate with other colleagues around the world to complete their tasks instead of wasting valuable time taking a flight to the other side of the world, for example a flight from Buenos Aires to shanghai can be above 14 hours. The amounts of work that can be done in 14 hours give it a productivity advantage. Instead the employee can utilize this 14 hours in productive work done in the office through WAN. However there is also another issue that come across which is the time zones. Workers in Buenos Aires should work at night if they want to work with shanghai employees.
3. Here globalization is key. Different countries around the world have the luxury to communicate with other countries through simple wide area networking. Wide area networks get the offices together and closer to improve communication through webcams and headphones. Having virtual meetings can enhance the communication of offices like never before. It can also reduce the cost of flights and also reduce the time that travels consume. Therefore communicating also through chat is an advantage. WAN can give private chats between the offices, rather than the internet, it can also improve the speed of data transfer. However security issues arise with any network since it can be prone to hungry hackers trying to expose holes in the network.

Introduction
I will extend my ‘the distractions that laptop in schools poses’ portfolio. It is arguable whether the use of laptop provides education a new dimension in research and making notes or does it distract the student in accessing irrelevant websites, such as Youtube. There are no limitations in using a laptop at school; every website is accessible, allowing the student’s freedom to access the web in the middle of the lesson. I would question some QF staff in the technology section, about the usage of it in school, e.g. censoring gaming websites, or why didn’t they censor gaming website. The stake holders are the teachers, students, and it department, as all of these are involved in laptops.

Criteria B – Laptops in Schools
All laptops are miniaturized desktop computers where it needs to be weighing less, fit in a compact space, conserve electricity, and produce less heat than Desktop computers.
During the development of the laptops, which is continuing till this day, processor have became faster and smaller leading to longer battery life and stronger performances. This also led to fewer loading times for students to deal with wasting less time of their studies.
Laptops are becoming much smaller than in the past, students who are really physically challenged who were not able to carry their bags and laptops, can now buy 1.2 kilo laptops which are available at retail. These laptops excel in mobile technology, the smaller the laptops also are more comfortable for the students as they are cheaper, colder, lighter, and run longer battery life.
The development of wireless technology expanded the mobility of the laptops. Wireless access to this involves the wireless adapter sending a radio signal to the service, then there is connection established with the service provides, after selecting a website the wireless adapter send a request to the gateway server using the network established. Which then the gateway retrieve the data from internet servers and sent which is sent to the laptop by http format. The laptop then views the website just as a DSL cable. This opened the doors for students to access the internet and do their research in class, however this also lead to distraction habits, such as opening irrelevant websites and online gaming.

Criteria A
It is arguable whether the use of laptop provides education a new dimension in research and making notes or does it distract the student in accessing irrelevant websites, such as Youtube. There are no limitations in using a laptop at school; every website is accessible, allowing the student’s freedom to access the web in the middle of the lesson. This raises the ethical issue of policies and standards, which is the biggest issue in using a laptop in school. Many teachers are aware of the students having freedom to use their laptops in the lesson inappropriately.
Technology is an important aspect in education, there for there is the need of laptops in school to expand and give the student an electronic library which will be able in the lesson. This is a great example of policies and standard as it is difficult to prevent the students from using the internet appropriately and use it solitary for education. Most of the students in the school uses it for research, but many may used to play games, use messenger, and going to inappropriate websites
The concerns of students getting distracted by the laptops arise between teachers. the issue also expands into being hard to control students to use the laptops appropriately. Teachers are very limited when talking about monitoring on the user of the laptop. As they are very busy teaching the class, and if the teacher is monitoring the student, the student may feel their privacy being invaded.

new and improved!!!! portfolio 2 business
Criteria A
2
In today’s world ATM machines are used as a common activity all over the country to have easy access to the customer’s bank accounts. This lead to the exclusion of bank tellers because no one goes to the bank as long there is an ATM machine in the area. Even inside the bank there are several ATM machines. The main positive uses of ATM machines are the ability for a customer to withdraw their cash easily. In the past, customers had to go to the main branches of banks. In the bank there are bank tellers, these tellers manually give the customers their cash. There are many negative aspects of bank tellers. Firstly there take a bit longer than ATM machines to get the money. Secondly, there are fewer bank tellers than ATM machines. ATM machines can be placed almost anywhere as long there is electricity and network. Another advantage is that it is easy to use and it is less crowded.
There is a clear disadvantage because ATM machines charge people about 3 dollars each time they use it. It also causes unemployment at the banks. Because the bank tellers are not needed due to the banks rely on the ATM, to make it easier for the customers to get their money. This cause fewer jobs in the costumer service section of the bank. However in the same time ATM machines create jobs in the maintenance department. The change in job area compensate on the unemployment.
Charging a customer for withdrawing money is controversial. Many people feel that it is not reasonable to charge money to get your own money. This fee is a new method from the banks to gain profit. Banks should not charge people for getting their money, because they already paid for this service. It is not expensive for the bank to operate a standard atm due to the fact there aren’t as many bank tellers to pay their wage.
Criteria B /2
ATM machines are used by a lot of people in a daily fashion. The major components in ATM machines are the database, network, software, and computer. These components shape up the ATM service. In every bank there is a database of private information and what the bank accounts contain, whether it is the amount of money to the password. This database contains plenty of encryption. The database is connecter to the bank’s network. This network connects all of the ATM machines to the bank’s server which then connects it to their database. The computer in the ATM machine makes these steps possible as it is the operation device that runs the initial ATM machine. The computer runs the ATM machine but in order for all of these actions to operate correctly. Well constructed software must run the computer. The software is programmed so it can process what the customer need from the ATM machine. It could be taking money or another service such as deposit or simply taking a receipt of how much money is in the account.
The future of the ATM is bright. There can be many developments to make it cost less and better to use. As processors become faster the connection between the server and ATM. Therefore there would be multiple calculations that will decrease time effectively. And also to reduce fraud there could be an identification device that will secure the machines from theft.
Criteria C
It is vital for a society to have some equality. People from the higher class and lower class in recent times are being more separated. Differences are being more common and therefore it is difficult to have an equal society. (Zuckerman, 2007) Recent ATM fees on the rise are not contributing in this issue. Lower class people are experiencing difficulties with the fees that are being offered. Richer class individuals will not have any problems with the 3 dollar fee compared to the poorer individual as this 3 dollar is a small percentage of the money he owns. In addition poorer individuals may simply withdraw twenty dollars; they cannot afford to pay a fee of three dollars. (Smith, 1996) This is a clear disadvantage of ATM machines. The high cost may benefit the bank but will cause a problem with lower class people.
It is vital for a society to have some equality. The reason is because there would be unjust treatment that may lead to protest. And it will also mean that the poor will get poorer and the richer, in this case the bank, will get richer. There would be a bigger gap between the rich and poor. We can see this happening in Africa where there is a huge ethical issue of inequality. (Ilett, 2006)
Also there is another issue with ATM machines, which is security. ATM machines are vulnerable to theft. Many individuals are being tricked in giving the pin code to a stranger because he offered help in retrieving their card from the tm machine. Therefore it is possible to have a swift ATM machine in a slot than to insert the card. (Benet, 2004)
Criteria D:
Society must consist with equality of access regardless of how rich an individual is. By putting a hefty price tag on an ATM machine service may reduce the amount of people using it, but crucially separate the rich and poor. The 3 dollar price is not too much for a higher class person, but too much on a lower class person therefore in order for the price be fair for the two people, there must be a percentage price on how much a person owns in the account. This will give a fair price tag on both classes so it shows some equality.
The bank should have a percentage of 0.01 of the total amount of money there is in an account.
This is a feasible solution because the bank may have a similar profit but in the same time give the different classes a balanced fee. In this case a lower class person may have a $1 dollar fee but a middle class get $2.5 and a higher class can get $5.
